Identification
The word patience comes from the Latin word for suffering. Sometimes the phrase "long suffering" is used as a synonym for patience. The ability to wait without getting angry is a sign of patience. Tolerance and compassion are other attributes often associated with patience.
Significance
People who are impatient usually have difficulty resisting the need for immediate gratification. Sometimes they seem to be impulsive. The most famous quote about patience equates it with love: "Love is patient" (See 1 Corinthians 13:4).
Function
Successful people work hard to develop patience. Leonardo da Vinci said that patience is a protection against wrongs in the same way that clothes protect a person from the cold. Isaac Newton believed that having the patience to pay attention was the reason why he made discoveries and discovered the law of gravity.
Considerations
If you don't have patience, you may find it difficult to reach your goals. Usually challenges and obstacles arise after setting important goals. People with patience follow the motto, "if at first you don't succeed, try, try again." People who lack patience tend to quit when things get difficult.
Potential
One way to develop patience is to vow to live one day at a time. It takes patience to recognize that people change very slowly. Once you know this, it is easier to accept others. To have patience toward others, first you must accept your own failings.
